What the Grand Canyon Teaches Us About Local Google Search
At the Grand Canyon, two points can look close on a map and still be far apart in practice. Local search works in a similar way.

About Grand Canyon
Grand Canyon National Park covers more than 1.2 million acres in northern Arizona. The Colorado River runs 278 miles through the park.
The canyon averages about one mile deep and about ten miles from rim to rim. The South Rim averages about 7,000 feet in elevation and the North Rim about 8,000 feet.
On September 17, 1901, the first Santa Fe Railway train arrived at the South Rim. Grand Canyon Village grew rapidly around it, and much of that historic village is preserved today.
Why location matters in Google Search
Google says local results are based mainly on relevance, distance and prominence. Distance is the one factor a business can't change — and it's why two people a few miles apart can see different businesses for the same search.
Google measures how close a business is to the person searching, but real-world distance isn't the only thing that matters. People searching from Phoenix, Mesa or Tucson each see their own nearby results.
In a sprawling state like Arizona, a business that looks close on a map may still not appear for searchers a few exits away. Measuring visibility on a grid shows where you actually show up.

How proximity affects local discovery
A business rarely ranks evenly across a city. Visibility is usually strongest close to the business and fades with distance, especially in dense areas where many competitors sit within a mile or two.
