What Colorado's Red Rocks Teaches Us About Local Google Search

Red Rocks sits where the Great Plains meet the Rocky Mountains, just west of Denver. It's a good place to talk about how one metro can hold many local markets.

About Red Rocks

Red Rocks Park is in Morrison, Colorado, in the foothills west of Denver. The City and County of Denver acquired the park lands in 1928.

In 1936, Denver received federal approval to use the Civilian Conservation Corps to build Red Rocks Amphitheatre. Its design is the work of Colorado architect Burnham Hoyt.

The amphitheatre's official grand opening took place on June 15, 1941.

Why location matters in Google Search

Google says local results are based mainly on relevance, distance and prominence. Distance is the one factor a business can't change — and it's why two people a few miles apart can see different businesses for the same search.

Concertgoers searching for dinner before a show see results around Morrison and west Denver. Someone searching from Aurora or Westminster sees an entirely different map pack.

Along the Front Range, a Denver address won't carry visibility to Colorado Springs or Fort Collins. Each city needs its own presence and its own measurement.

Around Red Rocks, searchers in each of these areas can see a different local map pack:

  • Morrison
  • Lakewood
  • Golden
  • Littleton
  • Denver

How proximity affects local discovery

A business rarely ranks evenly across a city. Visibility is usually strongest close to the business and fades with distance, especially in dense areas where many competitors sit within a mile or two.
